natal prototype device

Brief Description

The Project Natal prototype was launched in 2009 at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo).

The device is an extension of Microsoft's Xbox gaming console, which combines 5 Key technologies.

  1. A Time of flight 3d Camera for recognising depth and points of interest (people) within complex 3d envrionments.
  2. Facial recognition for identifying individuals by sight rather than by a common username / login data entry process.
  3. Speech recognition (including acoustic source localization and ambient noise suppression ) for communication and navigation in noisy environments.
  4. Full body motion capture for recognising a person's movements and applying it to an in game avatar.
  5. Video capture for scanning real world objects and then placing them within virtual environments.

Peter Molyneux , of Lionhead Studios, produced the 'Milo' tech demo for the prototype launch at e3. Although he claims that it is technology science fiction hasn't imagined yet, the Milo demo (which features a virtual boy that can interact with a human using the Natal system) is eerily similar to Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrik's HAL 9000 computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
