Brief Description

The Project Natal prototype was launched in 2009 at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo).

The device is an extension of Microsoft's Xbox gaming console, which combines 5 Key technologies.

A Time of flight 3d Camera for recognising depth and points of interest (people) within complex 3d envrionments.
Facial recognition for identifying individuals by sight rather than by a common username / login data entry process.
Speech recognition (including acoustic source localization and ambient noise suppression ) for communication and navigation in noisy environments.
Full body motion capture for recognising a person's movements and applying it to an in game avatar.
Video capture for scanning real world objects and then placing them within virtual environments.

Peter Molyneux , of Lionhead Studios, produced the 'Milo' tech demo for the prototype launch at e3. Although he claims that it is technology science fiction hasn't imagined yet, the Milo demo (which features a virtual boy that can interact with a human using the Natal system) is eerily similar to Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrik's HAL 9000 computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Social inclusion, digital inclusion: the role of Vicnet (SLV)

Newly arrived communities, seniors and people with disabilities have specific needs when it comes to accessing and using the web which has now become a necessary life skill. Government has a need to ensure that these communities are not excluded from active participation in society. This talk will cover the work that Vicnet does as a business unit of the State Library of Victoria (SLV), with special emphasis on the projects delivered to align with the State Government’s social inclusion policy agenda. These include projects that:

emphasis community based ICT skills development, e.g.CALD Senior Surfers, Internet Training for People with a Disability
increase access to internet for Victorians; and,
Develop content for the web, e.g wikinorthia
Support content creation for the non-English speaking web e,g MyLanguage

Brendan Fitzgerald is currently Manager of Vicnet which as the community based ICT business unit of the State Library of Victoria is responsible for delivering a number of significant digital inclusion programmes for the Victorian community. During his time at Vicnet he has overseen a number of projects aimed at increasing the communities’ capacity to use and have access to ICT. This has included projects such as the Libraries Online Project which connected all branch libraries in Victoria to the internet and developed the Gulliver Consortium for collaborative purchasing of digital resources. As well he has convened the award winning MyLanguage project www.mylanguage.gov.au. Brendan is very interested in the role that libraries in particular can play in developing social inclusive and positive communities.

Who uses it
Not everyone uses email – trends indicate that IM is becoming the communication of choice for teens/young adults – portability, immediacy, chitty chat, informal talk. But it isn’t just teenagers who use this service. Active ‘fan-club’ is seeing continuing development of applications. Twitter is still very much in its infancy and in a process of evolution.

What is its purpose

It’s about immediacy, portability and accessibility of receiving messages on a variety of devices.
Essentially a net-based chat room filled with your friends – or the world if you prefer
140 characters or less – succinct – able to be sent in a single text message
You can elect to send and receive messages any number of ways--through Twitter's website, through your mobile phone (via SMS), through your IM client, through RSS, or through a number of third-party tools that have emerged to help people access and interact with the Twittersphere.
It’s a microblogging application, a instant messenger, a social presence notifier – “I’m off to the movies”
microblog as something similar to a constant mind-dump e.g. “have you seen this article?”
Can be set to private

In recent months Google has purchased Jaicoo which was a similar product to Twitter.

Google Maps Street View

History

Launched for 5 American cities in May 2007.
Now (August 2008) covers all or parts of hundreds of cities in 5 countries – US, France, Italy, Japan and Australia.
Street Views for major Australian cities and towns available since August 4 2008.

Technique

Mount a special camera on the roof of a car.

Drive up and down every street in the city, taking 360 degrees worth of street-level photos every 10 metres.
Knit them together back in the computer lab.
Add them to Google Maps (and Google Earth)
“Face blurring” to obscure people's faces and car registration plate numbers.

Australian coverage

Start from a low zoom level
Small towns may or may not be covered.
More often than not, the camera car just drove along the main street (or the main highway through town) but no side streets.
