Wasn't sure about going along as this was the first time that i had attended a session and all this was new to me. But within a few minutes i felt at eased, as the presentation being presented before me was very interesting as i found that i could relate to some of the issues that were been presented and was able to catch up with the presenter afterwoods for some further infomation and questions answered.

It was interesting to hear how the library was able to partner with government to deliver services and how the skills of the library staff were being used. There must be a lot of effort put into developing and maitaining these inter-governmental relationships.

I'm new to this and I must admit I find this website a bit confusing. Took me a while to realise I had to scroll right down to the bottom of the page to post a thread. I guess I'll get the hang of it in time. The concept of a shared site is good and saves the email overload problem. Keeping up with all the new technology is challenging though..will we ever have time to get out into the fresh air and sunshine again?

Couldn't agree more -very succinctly put. I also found this site confusing, and also had to be directed to the end of the page to realise what I had to do and where I had to do it.

Our parents and grandparents only had to cope with man walking on the moon. They could ignore them as they weren't directly affected. We have to cope with the ever changing technology - cameras, remote contols on electrical items [even the CD player in the car] and the computer age. There is a name for the fear of change -Technophobia. Doing the Licence 2 Test Drive course is giving me the skills to embrace this new technology. I am enjoying it and look forward to each new lesson.

I'm very enthusiastic about keeping up with all the new technology in terms of its use in enhancing libraries' services and communication. RFID, Playaways, e-Newsletters, Messenger, wikis, and social networking sites have enriched our library community and made life much easier. However, I must admit to wondering how useful some blogs are. I can see that blogs relating to people's passions and interests would be well utilised, but I have seen a lot of library (and other business type sites) where the blogs are virtually unvisited and there are little or sometimes no replies and new threads. I think we need to be careful we don't use a tool just to say we are using it, but to make sure it is relevant and worthwhile.

I am excited about learning the new technologies but my biggest problem is finding time away from my "to do" list to work on learning about them and improving my skills. How do others fit time for technology into their working day?

Remember it's not something you're doing for you per se. It's something you're learning so that you can enhance your service to clients - thus it's a must do.

I think it would be useful to have workplace post-program analysis of 2.0 programs so that staff can reflect on what direction their service will then take. What worked, what didn't? Which applications can you develop to support the service for clients. Or build a demo into the program - guide other staff on what you can use a particular application for.

I agree. There needs to be a professional focus to use the tool as a communicative medium. Twitter about new projects, new books in. Provide a wiki on library procedures or collections - have a focus.

After looking at several of the example of wikis around the world it looks like they could be a great asset if used properly and updated regularly. I was suprised to see a wiki that you had to pay to be a member of before you could view any information (seems to defeat the idea of a wiki)

Being new to the library game I was really impressed seeing the example by Antioch Uni using a wiki for their proceedure manual. It would be an excellent tool for training new staff, and keeping staff updated with the lastest changes - so long as they were kept up to date. More libraries should be using them!

SLQ's License 2 test drive & the 23 Things program are extremely valuable as they enable library staff to "Play & learn" during work time. Just learning about some of these web tools give staff the confidence to go further and discover more and more things on the web and to evaluate their usefulness and application in their professional and private lives. The difficulty is finding the time to keep up and check out new things as they are created.

My examination of wikis, prompted by the Licence 2 Test Drive program, has highlighted the potential of them. They can be a fantastic way to reach out to your library clients and engage them enough to participate back. Wikis can also be considered a device to provide up to date information at the fingertips of library staff, along with providing an avenue for them to contribute to their production.

Our library has started an internal wiki to collate all of our policies and procedures. This allows staff to access this information from the one location instead of remember where everying is stored. Learn to 2 Test Drive has certainly opened my eyes to what is available to Libraries in terms of emerging technologies

the more I learn the more I realize this opportunity would not be available to me without these new technologies being made available online. I am amazed at what is out there, both information and things like wikis which enable communication between like-minded folk. I am on a steep learning curve but it is fun.

Using wiki could potentially be a great tool for me at work. Not just in my job as relief at the library, but also in my other job as a tourism officer, the road is endless. I think it is fantastic that slq is giving everyone the opportunity to learn this new technology. I know that with out this little push from them, it is something I would still be obvious too. – Too Old To Learn – Not Likely

The potential to use wiki as a communications tool is incredible. Just gaining the confidence to become involved in this project has been enough for me to get the brain cells motivated! I live in a relatively isolated area and the use a wiki is unlimited in setting up online communities to share knowledge etc. Of course, spending time online is always a challenge but surely we can save time be accessing specialised information through this resource?

Ann Arbor District Library (http://www.aadl.org/) in the US lets users tag catalogue records and contribute reviews. Plus they have this fun little thing where you can add scribbled marginalia to an old fashioned catalogue card. They also have a bunch of blogs users can comment on.
In Aus Brisbane City Libraries (http://elibcat.library.brisbane.qld.gov.au/) and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (http://www.yprl.vic.gov.au/) use Tag Browser to incorporate LibraryThing tags into their catalogue (although library users can't directly add their own tags).
Sutherland Shire Libraries (http://library.sutherland.nsw.gov.au/) use delicious in their online subject guides.

That is really interesting - we have finally upgraded our OPAC to support customer interaction although we still haven't rolled this out. The Ann Arbor initiative sounds way cool - its always great seeing other library's ideas to help discover a solution for your own library...Yarra Plenty set a brilliant benchmark for everything 2.0 - they are such visionaries!
