Exciting but ....
May 11 2009, 7:31 PM EDT
I am excited about learning the new technologies but my biggest problem is finding time away from my "to do" list to work on learning about them and improving my skills. How do others fit time for technology into their working day?

All very true - sometimes learning the new technology that is supposed to make our lives easier just seems way too hard. Climbing back under the doona and waiting till it all goes away isn't an option, is it?

I can only take so much excitement in one day! There is so much new technology and information that I feel like my head will explode if I try to keep up with it all. I'm trying to keep perspective and a bird's eye view on it all. I do think a lot of these activities are time leeches... sucking more time out of each day. However it is really great to get an overview and basic understanding of their applications.

I agree, we are all busy folk, but how many remember when they first started emailing or browsing the web? Now it is 2nd nature to most of us and we couldn't do without it. So....keep at it and the more we use these technologies the more familiar we become with just what they can do for us and others. We will surely save time eventually :)

Yeh! The time thing is a real problemo. As a bloke i have lots of technonlogy all around me and i'm really into it but where do you draw the line. I've recently downloaded three new techno programs that i've located through the wiki sites. They are great programs but i still haven't had a chance to use them as i'm just too busy. I also think that it's an age related thing too. That young people grow up living and breathing computers and for them it's liking walking down the street. But for us age challenged learners there's already a lot of stuff crammed into the memory banks and a much higher degree of effort is required to assimilate and accomodate all this new stuff to where we can actually use it proficiently. And lets face it, "if you don't use it you lose it." I think new technologies are great but live in fear of becoming socially isolated through them; where i spend so much time "connecting" through the computer, that i just haven't got the time left to go out there and engage with the world unless i'm shopping for more technology. I think we have to be really selective and pick a few good tech formats that we can truly use to our best advantage and just focus on getting quality from them. There are just too many to try engaging with them all. What do you think?? Do you find this valuable? |

"They are great programs but i still haven't had a chance to use them as i'm just too busy. " - Remember why you downloaded them in the first place - they excited you. So try to find the time to play with them a bit and then see if they fit into your life/work, and if they don't meet your needs, then ignore them and focus on the tools you do enjoy would be my suggestion. :)Do you find this valuable? |

RE: message 6I forgot to sign in so my message appears as anonymous :( And I do agree with previous sentiments, not all technologies are easy to master and require time and effort to learn but having done so, we will find some of them invaluable. Do you find this valuable? |

I also have found it hard to find time to work on the new technologies . But what I have found useful is for me to block out a time in my calendar. This way I know I have set the time aside. Also it enables others to see that I am unavailable. i hope this helps.

Yes, like everyone else time has been a factor, probably because it became impossible to manage at work. Staff members get sick, go on holidays, the day gets extra busy and so on and any spare time I might have used is gone. This made it necessary to work on it all at home if I wanted to get this course completed. As a result I basically stopped but tonight I've taken up where I left off because I do want to complete this course. So no distractions allowed

Remember it's not something you're doing for you per se. It's something you're learning so that you can enhance your service to clients - thus it's a must do.
